Valentines day entails going out for a meal, so today my housemate and I decided to check out Fat Cat, to see what its Valentines day menu had to offer.
The set menu cost £21.99 for three courses and a cocktail, with a nice range of meals to choose from.
The cocktail list held 6 different types of cocktails, mainly gin or cherry brandy based. I chose a 'Gin Sin' which was a mixture of vodka, gin, crushed raspberry and cucumber, elderflower and creme de cassis. It was very refreshing and complemented the food fairly well.
Starters included French Onion Soup, Tempura Battered Vegetables with a Sweet Chilli Dip, and a selection of different salads. And we were spoilt for choice on the mains. Given the options of:
- a steak with sauteed potatoes, onion and mushrooms with a side of steamed broccoli
- chicken wrapped in parma ham with an array of mixed vegetables
- grilled sea-bass with sweet potato mash, chorizo,
caramelised onion and sautéed leek
- goats cheese and mediterranean vegetable tart with tomato pesto and balsamic mixed leaves
Of which my housemate and I choose to pick two different options and split them. They were both delicious, and beautifully presented. I particularly liked the sea-bass and would recommend it to anyone, if it is included in the everyday menu.
The three desert options were, chocolate brownie and peanut butter ice-cream sundae, baileys and berry cheesecake, or prosecco and elderflower jelly with shortbread. Although strangely we don't think we received to right order. My housemate ending up with an apple crumble sundae and I, myself, getting a lemon and lime cheesecake. Despite the mix up, we both enjoyed our deserts so were not disappointed with the meal on the whole.
The staff were very friendly, and service was quick, without giving you the impression that they were trying to hurry you out the door. On the whole, we both felt that we had received our moneys worth in both food and atmosphere.
Although I can not vouch for the restaurant with regards to its standard everyday menu, though I am sure it is superb, I can recommend it as the perfect place to visit next valentines day. With a set menu on par with its competitors, Fat Cat offers you a more unusual menu and allows you to experience somewhere less franchised .
